When people think of summer getaways in England, places like Cornwall, the Cotswolds or the Lake District usually steal the spotlight. But tucked quietly in the East Midlands is Rutland – England’s smallest county with picturesque villages and market towns set around the magnificent Rutland Water, yet it is one of England’s lesser discovered summer destinations.
With sparkling water views, the charming towns of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford, wildlife experiences and endless countryside scenery, Rutland is made for slow summer days and outdoor adventures.
Start With Rutland Water
No summer trip to Rutland is complete without visiting Rutland Water. The huge reservoir is the heart of the county and offers something for everyone, whether you want an active day outdoors or simply somewhere peaceful to unwind with a picnic.
One of the best ways to explore is by cycling the 23-mile trail that loops around the reservoir. Along the route, you’ll pass picnic spots and nature reserves; enjoy stunning lake views that almost feel continental on sunny days.
If cycling isn’t your thing, water sports such as paddleboarding and kayaking are hugely popular during summer with something for all members of the family.
And of course, there’s the iconic Normanton Church, if you want a leisurely stroll around the reservoir make sure you head round to the stunning building which stands dramatically on the edge of the water – when the reservoir was created the locals fought to keep this beautiful, historic building which has become one of the most photographed places in Rutland.

Spot Ospreys on a Wildlife Cruise
One of Rutland’s most unique summer experiences is taking an osprey cruise on the Rutland Belle. You can find out more about the Rutland Osprey Project and try and see the impressive birds of prey in the hides available at Lyndon Nature Reserve, an ideal place to visit before taking the cruise.
These evening boat trips give visitors the chance to see ospreys soaring and fishing over the water, the Osprey Conservation Project celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and is one of the UK’s most successful bird conservation stories. There’s something incredibly peaceful about being out on the lake at sunset while watching wildlife in its natural habitat.
Even if you’re not a dedicated birdwatcher, the scenery alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Cool Off at the Aqua Park
For families and thrill-seekers, Rutland Water Aqua Park adds a completely different energy to the county.
Think giant inflatables, climbing walls, slides, obstacle courses and lots of falling into the water. It’s fun, chaotic and perfect for those hot summer afternoons.
The aqua park has become one of Rutland’s biggest summer attractions and is especially popular during school holidays.

Spend an Afternoon wandering around town
Rutland’s county towns of Oakham, Uppingham and nearby Stamford, deliver classic English market-town charm.
The streets are lined with independent shops, cosy cafés, traditional pubs and old stone buildings that feel straight out of a postcard. Summer weekends often bring local markets and outdoor events so keep an eye on our events calendar!

Sometimes it rains, it’s England after all !
