Brimming with exceptional independent food and drink producers, Rutland’s reputation as “The County of Good Taste” is well deserved. Rather than being known for a single iconic dish, the county shines through its excellent local produce and artisan foods – a reflection of its proud tradition of farming and agriculture. Visitors can enjoy Rutland Red cheese, rich and nutty in flavour; Rutland sausages, seasoned with sage and herbs; and fresh trout from Rutland Water, often served in charming local pubs and restaurants. The county also boasts a vibrant craft drink scene, including local beers, gins, and English wines, each reflecting the character of the region. Together, these offerings make Rutland a celebrated destination for food and drink enthusiasts, renowned for its fresh, locally made produce and artisanal craftsmanship, all served with a warm and welcoming local atmosphere.
Hambleton Bakery opened in 2008 with the aim of bringing the flavour back to bread using organic flours and products free of preservatives, enzymes, and enhancers. The bakery and shop sit just outside Exton (follow your nose!), and there’s a good chance you’ll taste something of theirs if you eat in a local restaurant. The Rutland Pippin is one of Hambleton Bakery’s flagship items, developed in 2013 when they won the title of Britain’s Best Bakery for ITV. During the show, they created a product representing the region’s finest ingredients: the Rutland Pippin. Filled with ham hock, sausage meat, apple and quince purée, and Colston Bassett Stilton cheese, it is encrusted in a bread that sits between pastry and dough, presented in the shape of an apple. Visitors to the bakery can also explore a wide range of breads, pastries, and seasonal treats, each crafted with care and a respect for traditional baking methods.
The Grainstore Brewery, founded in 1994 through the collaboration of two friends, opened its brewery tap in September that year, focusing predominantly on traditional British cask ales. Their range includes classic styles such as bitters, milds, golden ales, and stronger dark ales. One of their best-known beers is Ten Fifty, a dark strong ale of about 5% ABV with rich roasted malt flavours and a smooth finish. Another popular beer is Cooking, a lighter golden bitter at around 3.6% ABV, brewed as an easy-drinking session ale. Triple B (Bunny Brown’s Bitter) is a classic best bitter with balanced malt and hop character, while Rutland Osprey is a golden ale with a crisp, refreshing profile. Not only do they offer great beer, but also fantastic food made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The brewery tap is a welcoming space where visitors can enjoy hearty meals alongside their drinks, soaking up the friendly, village-like atmosphere that makes Rutland so special.
