Description

Small family-run working farm with rare & native breed cattle and sheep. A fascinating place to learn, about food and the countryside. Great place to stay & explore one of England’s most lovely countryside areas. Our farm shop, open for more than 20 yrs sells a wide range of home grown & home butchered meats & a wide range of local flour, beers and pies. Near Rutland Water, & Melton Mowbray, of pie fame, Stamford & Leicester. Great pubs abound, as do walks and entertainment of every kind.

The Old Mill Retreat

The ultimate small scale, self-contained, tiny romantic retreat. The Old Mill has been completely restored, keeping exactly to its original design. Upstairs there is a King Size ‘Bateau Lit’ bed, and a shower room with loo and wash basin. Broad floor boards with rugs, two small windows and hand made wooden shutters.

An open traditional narrow spiral staircase leads you down to the kitchen/living area. Here, there is a large comfortable sofa, a small open plan kitchen with fridge, dish washer and washing machine, all on a gorgeous stone flagged floor. The kitchen comprises of a simple two hob range, kettle, toaster & large smart TV on the wall.

The Shephard’s Wing Retreat

The Shepherd’s Wing Retreat is a self-contained, independent, first floor apartment within the main farmhouse. Accessed via an external spiral staircase, its rooms command some of the finest views of the farm across the rolling hills of Rutland and Leicestershire.

This is a generous and comfortable space. Although it has no dedicated outside space, there are long walks to be enjoyed. Plenty of space to pitch a rug and settle down for a picnic. Of course our wonderful Farm Shop is nearby full of great treats to be enjoyed here, on that very picnic, or when you return home.

Bright and airy throughout, the bathroom has extraordinary vintage fittings with a wonderfully refreshing shower. These date back to the 1920’s and have been totally restored.

The king size bed is handmade in Oak. The bedroom & large sitting room receive the morning sun and have some of the finest views of the farm across ancient pasture, hedges and woodland.

In the fields below you will often see grazing rare breed cattle, sheep as well as a selection of wildlife that populate the farm. Buzzards, Kites, Kestrels abound, not to mention, hares, deer and many other animals.

The Old Stables Retreat

Perfect for a romantic getaway or a small family holiday with a difference, this is a delightful, totally self-contained, self-catering space, with a large fully equipped kitchen.

The kitchen has a large Lacanche Cluny dual Fuel Cooker. This is pretty much the classic farmhouse kitchen, again with high, beamed ceiling, big double Belfast sink, terracotta tiled floor and huge Welsh Dresser.

The master bedroom has what is possibly the most comfortable superking bed on the planet. While I appreciate that this might be a slight exaggeration, it really is a key feature of staying here. The bedlinen and towels etc. are from White Company and so our guests get that special touch of luxury in a quiet, stunning rural location. There is a big powerful shower with a large shower rose, & two loos, hence the 1/2 bathrooms under the listing details.

In between the big bedroom and an even larger sitting room is an open plan ‘snug’ with a charming, extremely comfortable antique ‘sleigh’ bed which measures 6 ft x 3ft 6 inches. Perfect for anyone of ‘normal’ height. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SNUG DOES NOT HAVE ITS OWN BATHROOM FACILITIES WHICH ARE SHARED WITH THE MASTER BEDROOM. From here, you come into the large sitting room with its original beams and timber tongue & groove ceiling. A wood burner as well as central heating. There is a huge television and wireless internet connection, two shabby chic Knowle sofas and an armchair. A Persian rug on top of sisal flooring.

This room, in turn, opens onto the kitchen described above. There are two sets of French doors which lead from these rooms out to a large area of grass surrounded by Olive trees, vines, roses and other plants.

All the internal space described above is exclusively for the use of our guests. Depending on the season the outside space may be used by a few other visitors during the day, but will normally be exclusively yours in the evenings. This is a working family farm, but we don’t normally make much noise. You have your own parking space close by.

Interaction with guests

Members of the family are normally around as are members of the Northfield Farm team. We are a friendly bunch and will do everything we can to make your stay a great and memorable experience. This includes explaining how we farm and introducing you to our animals. We can also arrange courses on a wide range of food and farming related subjects. Should these be of interest, please ask. If you wish to cook for yourselves here we recommend that you consider shopping at our farmshop either once you arrive or in advance on-line.

Other things to note

Just bear in mind that this is a working farm. Although not especially noisy, there may be tractors driving past, especially at harvest time. We have dogs and cats around though they do not come into guests accommodation.
