Eyebrook Reservoir isn’t just a beautiful spot for Eyebrook Reservoir isn’t just a beautiful spot for a peaceful walk or a day of trout fishing, it’s a place where history was made.

Built between 1937–1940 to support the nearby steel industry, this tranquil water now offers stunning views, rich wildlife and the perfect escape into nature. But there’s more beneath the surface…

During WWII, Eyebrook became a secret training ground for No. 617 Squadron RAF, led by Guy Gibson, as they prepared for the legendary Operation Chastise.

Today, you can stand by the water, take in the calm surroundings and imagine the roar of aircraft skimming across the surface before one of the most daring missions in history.

Discover Rutland; where there’s a story around every corner.

At Oakham Castle, a quirky tradition has stood for At Oakham Castle, a quirky tradition has stood for centuries. When a peer of the realm visited, they were expected to leave a horseshoe as a token of respect to the Lord of the Manor. This unusual tradition continues today, with over 240 elaborate ceremonial horseshoes lining the castle’s Great Hall walls.

Some historians link the custom to the de Ferrers family, whose name comes from the French word for a farrier and whose emblem featured horseshoes.

The oldest surviving horseshoe was given by King Edward IV in 1470 and the most recent in 2024 by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward and Sophie.

As spring reaches its height, May 1st has long bee As spring reaches its height, May 1st has long been marked across the British Isles as both Beltane and May Day. Two intertwined traditions celebrating the turning of the seasons and the beginning of summer.

In the Gaelic world, Beltane (meaning “bright fire”) was one of the great seasonal festivals. Bonfires were lit on hilltops, and homes were decorated with blossoms and greenery to welcome fertility and growth into the land and community.

Alongside these older rural customs, May Day developed into a wider celebration of spring across Britain and Europe. Communities gathered for feasting, dancing and revelry - even to this day, you can find maypoles which stand all year round across the country as a lasting symbol of May Day’s importance in British tradition and heritage.

Today, Beltane and May Day continue to be celebrated, honouring both ancient seasonal cycles and the joy of light returning to the world.

May Day is celebrated in Rutland with the Dawn Dance of the Rutland Morris, this unique event takes place at sunrise showcasing the vibrant spirit of Rutland and its enduring connection to these ancient customs.
