Description

Walkers is a locally run, family bookshop that was started by my father back in Oakham during 1972. Since then we have been quietly beavering away, serving the communities in Rutland with books, cards, news and more for nearly 50 years.

Being your local bookshop, run and staffed by Rutlanders, we care about our towns and villages, our beautiful local countryside and of course how we look after you and all of our customers. Some have been shopping with us since we opened.

We have over 7,500 books in stock at any one time and with over 500 new books arriving every month there is always something new for you to discover. We offer a next day ordering service on over 350,000 books, so if you can’t find what you are looking for we can usually get hold of it for you.

We love our cards almost as much as the books and have over 2,000 hand-picked designs for you to choose from.

We started off mainly as a newsagent way back in 1972, but did you know that in the 3-day week of the early 1970’s we caused consternation amongst our fellow traders in town because as as newsagent we were allowed to keep a single light bulb burning in the shop during blackout periods!

Don’t forget that we also sell Thornton’s wonderful range of chocolates and ice cream through the summer too. I must admit to having a soft spot for their luxury after dinner mints… no wait… I think it is apricot parfait… no hang on…

Anyway, if you are venturing into Oakham, do pop in to say hello, it will be lovely to welcome you.
