Discover Rutland: Where Scenic Beauty Meets Outdoor Adventure

Nestled in the heart of rural England, Rutland is a hidden gem for lovers of the outdoors. With its stunning landscapes, peaceful countryside, and vast stretches of water, this small but mighty county offers an incredible setting for a wide variety of sporting activities — from beginner-friendly events to serious challenges for seasoned athletes.

A Destination for Sport and Wellbeing

Rutland is a natural hub for outdoor sport and recreation. Whether you’re cycling through rolling hills, casting a line into the calm waters of Rutland Water, or taking on a triathlon, there’s something here for everyone. The county is particularly popular for cycling, fishing, sailing, running, open water swimming, triathlons, and an array of water sports. With such a diverse range of activities on offer, it’s the perfect destination for both weekend explorers and competitive athletes.

Weekly Parkrun at Rutland Water

Every Saturday at 9am, the community comes together for the Rutland Water Parkrun, starting at the picturesque Normanton Church. Open to all ages and abilities, this free 5K event welcomes everyone — from seasoned runners and joggers to those walking with friends, children in buggies, or even Nordic walkers.

Participants simply need to register via the Parkrun UK website and bring a printed barcode on the day. Afterwards, many runners head to the nearby café to unwind and enjoy a well-earned drink and chat.

For younger participants, Junior Parkrun takes place every Sunday at the same location and time. With a shorter 2km route and plenty of encouragement along the way, it’s a fantastic way to introduce children to running in a fun, supportive environment.

Parkrunners also benefit from £1 all-day parking on event days.

Annual Sporting Events in Rutland

Rutland hosts a packed calendar of annual sporting events, drawing thousands of participants and spectators each year. Highlights include:

The Rutland Marathon, attracting between 1,500 and 2,000 runners, and the popular Spring Half Marathon, which also sees around 1,500 participants. The 10K Night Run offers a unique experience under the stars for 500 runners, while the Vitruvian Triathlon and Dambuster Triathlon bring together between 800 and 1,200 competitors from across the UK.

Water-based events are equally popular. Swim Rutland welcomes up to 1,000 open water swimmers each year, while the Night Swim offers a more intimate, moonlit challenge for 200 participants.

Rutland is also proud to host the Rutland International CiCLE Classic, one of the most important events on the UK cycling calendar, as well as events by the UK Windsurfing Association. In the world of angling, Rutland has hosted major fishing competitions including the World Lure Championships, which drew 120 participants in 2018, and the prestigious AW AirFlo International, with 200 competitors.

Beyond your event, if you want to stay longer and discover our amazing county see our Spectators Guide.

Whether you’re aiming for a personal best, looking for a new hobby, or simply want to enjoy the great outdoors in a stunning location, Rutland offers the perfect blend of beauty and sport. Come for the fresh air, stay for the community — and leave inspired to return.

The menu changes frequently to reflect what’s freshest, with a range of delicious dishes such as new-season asparagus, goat’s cheese and lovage tart; slow-braised beef brisket with beef consommé, new potatoes, spring vegetables and wild garlic chimichurri; and a rhubarb and custard trifle for dessert. It’s the perfect excuse for a relaxed countryside lunch or sun-soaked evening meal this spring.

Surrounded by a landscape of fields and woodland, Surrounded by a landscape of fields and woodland, the village of Exton has been described as one of the prettiest in Rutland with attractive 18th and 19th-century thatched ironstone buildings grouped loosely around a shaded village green.

The village is dominated by Exton Hall with its Old Hall ruins, extensive formal grounds, garden follies, stone boundary walls, entrance lodges and gates. Nearby, the restored medieval parish church contains many outstanding 16th to 18th century family monuments.

Away from the village centre, the modern fields contain evidence of their past life as the extensive landscaped grounds associated with the country house and seat of the Noel family. The ornamental lakes, avenues of trees, and garden follies give a glimpse of the past splendour of a 17th/18th-century country house and its landscaped park.

If you want to explore Exton further, why not pick up one of our Fields & Follies Heritage Trails.

Rutland Water turns 50 What began in 1976 as a ma Rutland Water turns 50

What began in 1976 as a major engineering project to create a reservoir for the East Midlands has grown into one of the UK’s most beautiful outdoor spaces.

Today, it is a vibrant landscape of open water, wildlife and countryside, offering activities such as sailing, cycling and walking, as well as exceptional birdwatching and world class fishing.

Rutland Water has also been awarded both Blue Flag and Green Flag status, with its Sykes Lane beach becoming the first inland bathing site in England to receive Blue Flag recognition, highlighting its excellent water quality and visitor facilities. This incredible achievement means it is also the only Blue Flag site located within a Green Flag awarded site in the country.

Eyebrook Reservoir isn’t just a beautiful spot for Eyebrook Reservoir isn’t just a beautiful spot for a peaceful walk or a day of trout fishing, it’s a place where history was made.

Built between 1937–1940 to support the nearby steel industry, this tranquil water now offers stunning views, rich wildlife and the perfect escape into nature. But there’s more beneath the surface…

During WWII, Eyebrook became a secret training ground for No. 617 Squadron RAF, led by Guy Gibson, as they prepared for the legendary Operation Chastise.

Today, you can stand by the water, take in the calm surroundings and imagine the roar of aircraft skimming across the surface before one of the most daring missions in history.
