As summer begins to fade, the Autumn Equinox marks As summer begins to fade, the Autumn Equinox marks an important turning point in the seasonal calendar. The equinox is the moment when day and night are almost equal in length, signalling the transition from summer into autumn across the Northern Hemisphere.

For centuries, the changing seasons have been recognised and celebrated as part of the natural rhythm of life. The Autumn Equinox marks a time of balance, harvest and preparation, as the abundance of summer gives way to the quieter months ahead.

Across Britain, autumn has traditionally been a time of celebrating the year’s harvest, preserving food for winter and giving thanks for the fruits of the year’s work. It is also a season of noticeable change in the natural world, as hedgerows fill with berries, leaves begin to turn and woodlands slowly change from green to shades of gold, red and brown.

It’s a wonderful time to explore Rutland’s countryside, with cool, crisp mornings, changing colours across the landscape and the first wisps of smoke rising from fires as the evenings draw in.

Discover the county’s towns and villages and enjoy the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the changing season.
