Spring Wildlife at Rutland Water

Snowdrops and bluebells are beautiful in the woods around Rutland, and the meeting of winter and summer provides the chance to enjoy a multitude of wildlife at Rutland Water Nature Reserve. The remains of the winter ducks, swans and grebes still hang out on the lagoons, whilst in other areas of the reserve, new species begin to appear, migrating from their southerly winter grounds. Sand martin whizz over the heads of striking smew, the first ospreys fish alongside black-necked or Slavonian grebes, and in the woods, the first hint of the dawn chorus can be heard, whilst brambling still rummage in the leaf litter. https://www.lrwt.org.uk/spring-wildlife-rutland-water

Easton Walled Gardens – from Wednesday 14th February

Clear, white colour on crisp winter days and brightness on overcast winter mornings, there’s little to rival the winter beauty of the snowdrop. From late January to March, Easton Walled Gardens are covered in drifts of this delicate flower, which emerges from a bulb formed the previous March after sitting in wait for almost a year.

Visit Easton Walled Gardens as the first new growth of the year emerges and snowdrops open up across the Gardens. The Courtyard Shop will be open and hot drinks, savoury snacks and cake will be available from The Applestore or The Coffee Room. Meet up with friends, relax and enjoy. Open Wednesdays to Sundays 11am-4pm. https://www.visiteaston.co.uk/whats-here/the-gardens/snowdrop-season/

Snowdrop Sunday’s at Deene Park – 18th & 25th February

The first songs of the dawn chorus can be heard, leaf buds are starting to show on the trees and carpets of snowdrops quietly announce new life in the garden. At Deene Park swathes of these delicate flowers, of all varieties, begin to emerge having shaken off the winter blues. The spectacular display includes ‘Pusey Green Tip’ and ‘Blewbury Tart’; two among a cast of thousands and both in abundance in the grounds and gardens. Keeping them company are a variety of other early flowering plants and shrubs such as hellebores and crocus. Step into our garden this February and enjoy these delicate beauties for yourself. https://deenepark.com/snowdrops-sundays/
