From September to November, Rutland takes on a whole new character. The countryside comes alive with rich shades of amber, russet, red and gold, creating some of the most beautiful landscapes of the year.

It’s the perfect season to get outdoors and explore. Walk or cycle around Rutland Water, following the lakeside paths and country lanes as the trees change colour. Head to Rutland Water Nature Reserve at Egleton for autumn birdwatching, where migrating birds and resident wildlife make this a rewarding time of year for nature lovers. For a quieter countryside adventure, explore our heritage walking routes around Exton, Burley and the Vale of Catmose, stopping along the way to enjoy the views and seasonal scenery.

Autumn is also a great time to discover Rutland’s towns and villages. Spend a morning exploring Oakham, visit Oakham Castle, browse independent shops and galleries, or enjoy a warming coffee and homemade treat in one of the county’s cafés. In Uppingham, take time to wander its characterful streets and discover its independent shops before settling down for lunch featuring local produce.

For wildlife enthusiasts, the cooler months bring plenty to see. Take a peaceful walk beside Rutland Water, look out for waterfowl and other seasonal visitors, or simply find a quiet spot to enjoy the changing landscape. Autumn is also a wonderful time for photography, with early morning mist, golden woodland and reflections across the water providing plenty of inspiration.

And after a day outdoors, there’s nothing better than returning to a cosy country pub or restaurant to enjoy a hearty meal and a drink by the fire.

Whether you’re cycling beside the reservoir, spotting birds at Egleton, exploring Rutland’s villages or enjoying a crisp countryside walk, autumn offers a chance to slow down, breathe in the fresh air and experience the quieter side of rural Rutland.
