With October Half Term on the horizon, it’s time to slip into your wellies, wrap up warm and discover Rutland! There’s so much fun to be had, here are just a few ideas…

Open every day during October half-term and just a 10-minute walk from Oakham High Street, Rutland Farm Park is a family-owned and run working farm with everything you need for a fun family day out. This half-term, check out their ‘Octobaa’ Family Fun Day on 22nd! There will be lots going on including a scavenger hunt, face painting, arts and crafts, fun games and storytelling sessions.

Should the weather be too damp for al fresco adventures, Rutland County Museum has a lot to offer indoors and is free to visit. There is always plenty to keep little (and not so little) ones entertained. A range of activities will be on offer to help children explore the museum. When you’re ready to go outside for some fresh air, there’s an excellent play area and skate park in nearby Cutts Close.

Take in some history at our very own Castle! Visiting the grounds of Oakham Castle and the Great Hall is totally free of charge. As if that wasn’t family-friendly enough; you can even bring your four-legged friend – so long as (s)he’s on a lead!

Venture slightly further out and pay a visit to Burghley House. Their brilliant Halloween Craft Workshops are back this October Half Term! Join their talented Education team in The Sculpture Garden Classroom as they carefully teach you how to create your very own spooky Halloween crafts. Why not pack a picnic too and enjoy your sandwiches whilst taking in the beautiful views?

A great day out for all the family, Fineshade Wood is ideal to explore, cycle round and play in. You can build dens, look out for forest animals, and choose from three marked walking trails and a cycle trail (cycle hire is available on site). Fantastic playgrounds for children and the young at heart, woodlands spark imaginations, inspire a love of the natural world, and create happy memories you’ll have for a lifetime.

A little further afield in Thornhaugh, Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre offers all day family fun whatever the weather. The farm also features rare breeds of pigs, goats and sheep. Wildlife activities for children include discovering pond life, spotting red kites and brown hares.
