Garden Centres

An excellent range of garden centres and nurseries can be found throughout Rutland. Here are just a few of the horticultural delights on offer:

Rutland Garden Village  offers more than a garden centre, with a selection of shops, the Raddish Restaurant, Cakery, Food Market and children’s play area, you can spend hours here – located just north of Oakham.

Gates Garden Centre is only 4 miles from Oakham in Cold Overton, and was built in an original Victorian Walled Garden (formerly part of Cold Overton Hall). This spectacularly successful garden centre is still run by the Gates family and features a wide range of indoor and outdoor plants as well as garden care, hardware, homeware, gifts, garden furniture and BBQ’s. The Garden Restaurant serves breakfasts, lunches and afternoon tea in a beautiful setting with outstanding views across rolling Rutland countryside. Brands such as Lakeland, Mountain Warehouse and Cotton Traders are onsite, not forgetting their extensive Farm Shop. Their Christmas display is a destination in it’s own right!

Welland Vale – Garden Inspirations is close to Uppingham and is filled with everything for the discerning gardener, including an extensive range of quality home grown plants, shrubs, climbers and perennials. Garden inspiration continues in the form of decorative pots, statues, bird baths, stone benches and giftware. Not forgetting their lovely Orchard Cafe!

Rutland Nursery on the south shore, near Manton, grows around 90% of their quality plants and shrubs on site, including bedding plants, hanging baskets and perennials. Their new restaurant ‘The View’ provides a fantastic outlook towards Rutland Water.

At Barnsdale Gardens, there is a dedicated nursery stocking many of the species found in the gardens themselves. There’s also a lovely Tea Room and gift shop selling exclusive Barnsdale souvenirs as well as dvd’s and books.

The Grange Garden Centre offers all things plants, food, lifestyle, garden and home in two local settings; their original site near Melton Mowbray and their new for 2023 site at The Engine Yard, Belvoir Castle.

The Herb Nursery in Thistleton, near Oakham, specialises in herbs, wild flowers, cottage garden plants and scented-leaf Pelargoniums. The owners are proud to confirm that 95% of all plants sold are propagated and grown on site. The Herb Nursery is open every day except at Christmas and New Year.

Crowning a hill outside the county of Rutland, the Castle’s turrets and towers rise over the Vale of Belvoir like an illustration in a romantic fairy-tale. The name Belvoir – meaning ‘beautiful view’ in French, and pronounced today as ‘beaver’ – dates back to Norman times.
Recently won the prestigious GCA award for Best Destination Garden Centre in the Midlands Region for the second year running and, this year, was also voted in the top three in the entire UK.
Originally created by Geoff Hamilton for the Gardeners’ World TV show, Barnsdale is home to 38 pocket-sized, themed garden ‘rooms’, built in his trademark, practical style, and full of inspiration for garden-lovers of all ages. Go for great ideas for your own outside spaces or simply have fun exploring- there magical hidden corners, ponds full of tadpoles and newts, and an allotment with chickens and giant organically grown veg.
